Polish ambassador to Washington named

WARSAW, Poland -- Kazimierz Dziewanowski, a writer and journalist associated with Solidarity, was appointed Wednesday as Poland's ambassador to the United States, the government announced.

Dziewanowski, 60, published his first book in 1957. Some of his books have been published abroad. In the 1980s he wrote for Solidarity papers and was active in the underground press.

He was a member of the Citizens Committee, a body of intellectuals and union activists that advised Solidarity founder Lech Walesa.

Dziewanowski will replace Jan Kinast, a Communist.
