Prison teacher killed by inmate

LUCASVILLE, Ohio -- A murderer and arsonist serving a life term in prison followed a teacher into a woman's bathroom and slashed her throat Thursday, killing her for no apparent reason, prison officials said.

The woman, Beverly Taylor, 32, of Portsmouth, was an elementary education at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility for six years.

Eddie Vaughn, 48, of Summit County, who had been in the prison for six years, was not a student of Taylor's but worked in the area of the learning center and cut the victim's throat with a homemade metal weapon, officials said.

No motive was immediately disclosed for the killing and the Ohio Highway Patrol began an investigation.

Immediately after the killing, all 2,191 inmates at the prison were locked in their cells. No further incidents were reported.

Two psychologists were sent to the prison to talk with staff members.
