Florida State Guard Suspended Through February

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's leading scorer Tharon Mayes will be prohibited from playing with the basketball team throughout February because of an altercation with a parking meter patrolman last month, the school's judicial officer ruled Wednesday.

A statement released by the Office of Student Affairs said Mayes' conduct in the Jan. 29 on-campus incident, 'cannot be tolerated.'

Mayes already had been suspended by the Seminoles Athletic Department and has missed three games.

'Without question, the act of striking and injuring a University employee who was acting inthe course of his official duties is a very serious student conduct violation and cannot be tolerated,' said Dr. Jon Dalton, vice president for student affairs. 'Because of the seriousness of the violation, Mr. Mayes will not be permitted to represent the University in intercollegiate competition during the month of February.'

Student judicial proceedings are independent of disciplinary actions of the FSU Athletic Department and any potential civil or criminal litigation.

Mayes, a senior averaging 23 points per game, was charged with one count of aggravated battery for breaking the nose of campus patroller Mike Langston Jan. 29, following an argument over a citation for illegally parking in a fire lane. Mayes was released on his own recognizance the next day after he turned himself in at the Leon County Jail.
