MINEOLA, N.Y. -- Barney Kremenko, a baseball writer in the 1950s who gave Willie Mays his nickname, died Saturday in a Mineola hospital after a long illness.
He was 80.
Kremenko covered the New York Giants for the now-defunct New York Journal-American, and first referred to Mays as 'The Say Hey Kid' when the young center fielder broke in with the club.
Kremenko later was the first director of public relations for the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association and held the same post with the NHL's New York Islanders.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
