Lawyer is not sure Reedy was driving

DETROIT -- An attorney for William Reedy says he has not ruled out the possibility that the bar owner was a passenger and Billy Martin was driving the day the famed baseball manager was killed.

Martin died on Christmas after his pickup truck skidded off an icy road in upstate New York and slammed into a concrete culvert.

Reedy, a longtime friend of the former New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers manager, told police he was at the wheel and he now faces a drunk driving charge. He could be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

But attorney Jon Blechman told the Detroit News he is 'exploring that possibility' that Martin, not Reedy, was driving. And he has hired a private investigator to look into the matter.

'We're not going to say it's a probability or anything else at this point. But we are certainly exploring that,' he said.

There has been speculation that Reedy, who was seriously injured in the crash, said he was driving in order to deflect negative publicity from Martin.

Blechman dismissed what he termed Reedy's 'alleged statement' to police.

'People make statements. But there's also physical evidence that exists and doesn't exist.'
