Gunmen killed university founder near Medellin

MEDELLIN, Colombia -- Gunmen firing from a speeding automobile shot to death the founder of Colombia's Autonomous University of Latin American and a 24-year-old student, police reported Sunday.

Ramon Emilio Arcila Hurtado, 50, who also was a lawyer, was shot down along with Satrunino Lopez Zuluaga, a university student, as they walked along a street in Marnilla, a city about 30 miles from Medellin.

Arcila Hurtado was a member of the leftist Patriotic Union and a candidate for mayor of Marnilla.

Police said the gunmen sped by in a car, cutting the two men down in a hail of bullets. The killers sped off. Police said they did not know the identity of the gunmen or the motive for the shooting.

The Patriotic Union has been the target of repeated violence since its founding in 1985. More than 1,000 of its members have been killed.
