ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis pitcher Todd Worrell underwent successful surgery Friday to repair the damaged ligament in his right elbow, team officials said.

General Manager Dal Maxvill said Dr. Frank Jobe, who performed the surgery in Los Angeles, said Worrell could begin to pitch in June and hopefully rejoin the Cardinals at the All-Star break in July.

Worrell, who suffered the injury while pitching during a Sept. 4 game against Montreal, had refrained from throwing until a Nov. 20 workout at Busch Stadium. During that workout, he experienced soreness in the elbow.

Worrell, 30, posted a 3-5 record with a 2.96 ERA and 20 saves last year. He ranks second on the Cardinals all-time save list with 126, one behind Bruce Sutter's 127.
