LANDOVER, Md. -- Mike Ridley scored consecutive goals in the third period to break a tie and lift the Washington Capitals to a 7-4 victory Friday night over the New York Rangers, handing the visitors their first loss of the season.
Washington is unbeaten in their last five meetings with New York dating back to last season.
Goalie John Vanbiesbrouck made a kick save on a shot from the point by Dave Christian, but Ridley controlled the rebound and scored from the right side at 5:32 of the third period that gave the Capitalsa 5-4 Washington lead.
The Capitals made it 6-4 when Ridley swiped the puck from Vanbiesbrouck after a shot by Rob Murray and scored at 9:35 of the third period.
Christian scored an unassisted goal on a slap shot from the left circle for a 7-4 lead at 14:08 of the third.
Steve Leach gave Washington a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game, but John Ogrodnick's backhander at 11:02 of the first period tied the game 1-1.
Dale Hunter scored on a breakaway for a 2-1 Capitals lead at 12:26 of the first period, but an unassisted goal by New York's Jan Erixon evened the score at 19:31.
Tony Granato's goal at 12:07 of the second period lifted the Rangers to a 3-2 lead.
Washington's Dino Ciccarelli tied the score 3-3 with a goal at 13:32 of the second period on a rebound and Geoff Courtnall's goal at 15:34 of the second period gave the Capitals a 4-3 lead.
New York tied it 4-4 at 2:42 of the third when Troy Mallette scored off a rebound.
