'It's career-threatening,' Dr. Louis Kolb, the Blackhawks team physician, said. 'But I hope his chances for a comeback are good.'

Kolb said Pang suffered a gradual deterioration of his left knee following a 1983 injury while playing for Ottawa in the junior leagues.

Terms of Chevrier's contract were not disclosed.

The Blackhawks acquired Chevrier last January from the Winnipeg Jets for a fourth-round 1989 draft selection.

Chevrier started the season with Winnipeg, posting an 8-8-2 record with a 4.29 average before he was traded to Chicago, were he had a 13-11-2 record and a 3.51 average. In his playoff debut last season, Chevrier turned in a 9-7 performance with a 2.61 average.

Chevrier began his career as a free agent with the New Jersey Devils after graduating from Miami of Ohio. He posted his best season in the NHL with the Devils -- 24 wins in the 1986-87 season.

Chevrier was traded to Winnipeg in 1988. Chevrier has a career record of 75-83-11 with a 4.11 average.
