Chiefs sign kicker Nick Lowery

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Nick Lowery, the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history, ended his 42-day holdout and signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, the team announced Thursday.

The Chiefs, who wrap up their exhibition season Friday night at home against the New York Jets, made several other roster moves Thursday including the addition of former Washington center Michael Morris off waivers and the waiving of kicker Mark Porter, defensive end Walt Bowyer and center Mike Scully.

It was also announced that running back Lionel James was waived after failing a physical examination.

Lowery, a 10-year veteran, owns a career field-goal percentage of 77.9 (201 of 258), trailing only the New Orleans' Morten Andersen's 78.2 percent, while his career PAT accuracy rate of 99.35 (304 of 306) trails only Tommy Davis' league record 99.43 (348 of 350). Lowery and Jan Stenerud, the kicker he replaced in Kansas City, share the NFL record for most field goals of 50 yards or more with 17.

Morris, a two-year NFL veteran, was assigned the Chiefs' deep-snapping chores and will backup Mike Webster at center. The 6-5, 275-pounder was signed in March as a free agent by the Redskins but was waived this week. The former Northeast Missouri State standout spent the 1988 season on the Phoenix Cardinals' injured reserve list with a knee ailment. Morris played 14 games with the Cardinals in 1987.
