Joe Nieuwendyk scored four of his club-record five goals...

CALGARY, Alberta -- Joe Nieuwendyk scored four of his club-record five goals in the second period Wednesday night to pace the Calgary Flames to an 8-3 penalty-filled victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Nieuwendyk scored three of his goals within a 1:51 span late in the middle period to give the Flames a 7-3 lead after two periods. The four goals by Nieuwendyk tied a NHL record for the most goals in a period.

Calgary took a 2-1 lead in the opening period, which featured 94 minutes in penalties assessed by referee Bob Myers. In all 252 minutes in penalties were called.

Andrew McBain give the Jets a 1-0 lead scoring his 24th goal of the season at 5:37. Nieuwendyk and Jim Peplinski scored 44 seconds apart giving the Flames their 2-1 lead.

Nieuwendyk tied the score 1-1, notching his 27th of the season on a Calgary power play at 11:45. Peplinski put the Flames in front at 12:29.

The chippiness continued into the middle period with 132 minutes in penalties being handed out and the Flames taking a 7-3 lead.

Joe Mullen scored his 27th goal of the season at 5:15 and Nieuwendyk scored his second goal of the game at 6:29 for a 4-1 Calgary lead.

Brent Ashton scored for Winnipeg at 7:22, cutting the lead to 4-2, but Nieuwendyk struck with his 29th of the season just over 10 minutes later at 17:29 scoring a shorthanded goal on a two-on-one break with Colin Patterson.

Ashton scored his second goal of the game 15 seconds later making the score 5-3 at 17:44.

Nieuwendyk added his fourth and fifth goals of the period 42 seconds apart. He deked Jets' goalie Daniel Berthiaume on a breakaway at 18:40 for his 30th of the season and scored his 31st goal at 19:22 beating Berthiaume with a 25-foot snapshot on the shortside from inside the faceoff circle.

Gary Roberts scored for Calgary at 12:04 of the third for the final margin. Calgary outshot the Jets 36-21 in the contest.
