WESTFIELD, Mass. -- An amnesia victim who speaks with a British accent was still unidentified Saturday, one week after he was found wandering around the woods in rural western Massachusetts, authorities said.
The man, referred to by authorities as John Doe, has defied identification despite being in good health, demonstrating a wide vocabulary and mentioning several names, police said.
He appears to be about 40 years old, police said.
He was found Dec. 24 wandering along a rural section of Route 112 in Huntington, police said. He had no money, no jewelry, no papers and no keys, police said. He has stayed at Noble Hospital in Westfield while the FBI tries to learn his identity.
An alert sent to police across the country produced hundreds of calls, but none of them has checked out, Westfield detective Lt. Michael Avonti said.
His British accent and a light brown outer coat with an English label prompted investigators to contact authorities in London, but no information has been received during the past week from Britain, Avonti said.
Investigators thought they had a lead when a man who asked not to be identified reported that the John Doe used the name of Michael Brennan while they shared a hospital room last month at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Baystate Medical Center confirmed the John Doe used the name of Michael Brennan, and the John Doe also mentioned the name among several others, but police said they remained unsure whether that was his actual name.
Avonti said he believed the John Doe must have been driven to the spot where he was found, since it was 10 miles from the nearest bus station.
