BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Top-seeded France and sixth seed Italy won their semifinal matches Saturday to advance to the finals of the Sunshine Cup international boys tennis team competition.
France beat third seed Ecuador 2-0 in their semifinal match, while Italy edged unseeded Spain 2-1.
France and Italy will meet Sunday in the final.
Stefano Pescosolido and Massimo Boscatto, finalists at the U.S. Open junior championships, gave Italy the deciding victory over Spain. They defeated Sergio Bruguera and Jose Conde, 6-2, 6-1, after the teams had split the two singles matches.
Pescosolido earned the tie by beating Bruguera, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, after Conde defeated Boscatto, 7-5, 4-6, 8-6.
With no tiebreaker played in the third set in Sunshine Cup competition, Conde broke Boscatto's service in the 13th game and held in the 14th after erasing three break points.
France earned its victory on singles wins by 18-year-old Guillaume Raoux, third on the International Tennis Federation ranking list, and Fabrice Santoro, the No. 1 ranked French 16-year-old player.
Raoux beat Ecuador's No. 1 junior, Andres Alarcon, 6-1, 6-1, in 44 minutes. Santoro won the last nine games to defeat Giorgio Carneade, 1-6, 7-5, 6-0.
