WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 1988 (UPI) - The 1988 election at a glance: Winners

--The presidency: Vice President George Bush, Republican, defeated Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, Democrat, to become 41st president succeeding Republican Ronald Reagan.

--Senate: Democrats won 19 seats, were leading for one; Republicans won 13 seats. The indicated Senate in the 101st Congress: 56 Democrats, 44 Republicans, a net gain of two Democrats.

--House: Democrats won 260 seats, were leading for two seats; Republicans won 173 seats. Indicated net gain of five Democrats.

--Governorships: Democrats won five; Republicans won seven. A gain of one Democrat for a national lineup of 28 Democrats, 22 Republicans.

Popular vote

--Unofficial vote: Bush 47,723,169 or 54 percent of the vote; Dukakis 40,870,166 or 46 percent of the vote.

Electoral vote

--Bush won 426 by carrying 40 states; Dukakis won 112 carrying 10 states and the District of Columbia; 270 electoral votes were needed to win.

Turnout

--Estimate pending, but may be below 50 percent and lowest since 1924. Turnout in 1984 was 52.1 percent of age-eligible citizens.
