MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Marvin Cox scored on a 2-yard run on the game's opening drive Saturday night and the Memphis State defense shut down Arkansas State's wishbone for a 9-7 victory.
Arkansas State's Eric Haley caught a 7-yard halfback pass from Marvin Houston with 11:02 left in the game, but the Indians, 1-1, came away empty on two previous trips inside the Tiger 10-yard line.
Memphis State, 1-1, started out strong, driving 75 yards on 12 plays, and Cox bolted over with 10:05 remaining in the first period. John Butler missed the extra point.
Quarterback Tim Jones was the catalyst on the drive, converting a third-and-three with a 12-yard pass to Charles Wilson to the Tiger 44 and later picking up another first down with a 5-yard run.
Arkansas State's Don Palmer recovered a fumble at the Tiger 17 early in the second period. The Indians drove to the Tiger 6 on three straight runs by Richard Kimball. Two miscues gave the Indians a fourth and 16 and Jim Branch's 32-yard field goal attempt hit the right cross bar.
Memphis State took over at its own 5-yard line with 2:43 remaining in the half. The Tigers drove to the Arksansas State 26 where Butler hit a 43-yard field goal with four seconds left for a 9-0 halftime lead.
