Nebraska -- 1) over UCLA -- This week's early season, eye-opener should supply the Bruins with another black eye courtesy of the Big Eight. The Cornhuskers have outscored the Bruins 126-46 in their three meetings since 1983. (UCLA also lost to Oklahoma, the other Big Boy of the Big Eight, 38-3 in 1986). The game offers a look at two Heisman-hyped quarterbacks of different styles: UCLA's pro-style passer Troy Aikman and Nebraska's versatile Steve Taylor. Last year at Lincoln, Taylor set a school mark with five touchdown passes to lead the Cornhuskers to a 42-33 victory over the Bruins. UCLA added two TDs in the last 3:46 to make the score close. If one of Aikman's goals as a collegian is to beat Nebraska, he should have stayed at Oklahoma instead of transferring after the 1985 season. The storyline of this game should be similar, though not as extreme, as the teams' recent collisions thanks to a reoccurring key point: the Cornhuskers will outmuscle the Bruins on the lines. The Cornhuskers continue their drive at the national title while the Bruins must again set sights on a bowl triumph and Top 10 finish.
Nebraska 31, UCLA 24. East Penn State (minus 2 ) over Virginia -- Tough call. Cavaliers are much improved, but when in doubt, go with Paterno.
Penn State 24, Virginia 17. South Wyoming (minus 8) over Louisville -- Cowboys opened impressively with victory over fellow WAC foe Brigaham Young. Cardinals played tough at Maryland, but should be overmatched here.
Wyoming 35, Louisville 16.
Tennessee (minus 13) over Duke -- Have a feeling Johnny Majors had a few words for his Volunteers after loss to Georgia. Pity the Blue Devils.
Tennessee 41, Duke 21. Midwest Notre Dame (minus 2 ) over Michigan -- Wolverines vastly overrated and will feature same old story: run, run, run. Irish suspect too, but the home field should be the key.
Notre Dame 26, Michigan 17.
Ohio State (minus 2 ) over Syracuse -- Can Orangemen possibly spoil John Cooper's debut as Buckeyes coach? C'mon. More important question is what hat will Coop where to succeed Woody's baseball cap and Earle's fedora.
Ohio State 31, Syracuse 17. Southwest Arkansas (minus 19) over Tulsa -- Razorbacks, aching to crack Top 20, should smother Golden Hurricane.
Arkansas 37, Tulsa 10.
Iowa State (plus 8) over Tulane -- Hard to believe Green Wave favored by more then a touchdown on road. Can Sugar Bowl bid be far behind?
Iowa State 23, Tulane 10. West Colorado St. (minus 4 ) over Hawaii -- Rams played well in losing to Air Force. More important, Rainbows coming off upset of Iowa. Where will their heads' be.
Colorado State 27, Hawaii 14.
Stanford (plus 13) over Southern Cal -- Trojans among most overrated in country. Cardinal Coach Elway's run-and-shoot offense should cause problems for USC.
Southern Cal 24, Stanford 23.
