East German Gabriele Reinsch set a world record for...

NEUBRANDENBURG, East Germany -- East German Gabriele Reinsch set a world record for the women's discus Saturday, with a throw of 249 feet, 7 inches at a meet between East Germany and Italy.

Reinsch's throw -- 76.80 in meters -- was 7-4 (2.24 meters) longer than the previous record of 244-7 (74.56 meters) set Aug. 26, 1984 by Czechoslovakia's Zdenka Silhava.

The record throw by Reinsch came on the first of her series of six throws, all of which were longer than 229-8 (70 meters) except one that was disqualified.

Diana Gansky, also East Germany, was runner-up with a 239-4 (72.94-meter) throw, followed in third place by Italian Agnese Maffeis with 168-9 (51.44 meters).

The record came on the first day of the two-day meet.
