CALGARY, Alberta -- Klaus Sulzenbacher of Austria had the two best jumps in the 70-meter ski jumping competition Sunday and took a lead of over one minute into the cross country portion of the nordic combined event.

Sulzenbacher received 114.5 and 114 points for his two best jumps, giving him the first start position and a head start of 62 seconds in the 15-kilometer (9.6 mile) cross country portion of the event.

Hubert Schwarz of West Germany will start second, after his two best jumps placed him 9.3 points behind Sulzenbacher. Hippolyt Kempf of Switzerland is third.

Top American after the jumping is Joseph Holland of Norwich, Vt., who placed ninth and will start the cross-country race two minutes behind Sulzenbacher.

In nordic combined, athletes take three 70-meter ski jumps, with the best two counting based equally on style and distance. The jumping results are used to determine the starting order for the cross country race, with the distance between the start times pro-rated to reflect the distance in the jump scores.

The jumping portion was scheduled for Saturday, but high winds forced organizers to hold both the jumping and the cross country race on the same day.
