Wreckage of missing Philippines Airlines spotted

MANILA, Philippines -- Searchers Wednesday sighted the wreckage of a Philippine Airlines turbo-prop plane which disappeared on a domestic flight four days ago with 15 people aboard, the airline said.

PAL, in a statement Wednesday, said a search team has reported a 'definite sighting' of the missing plane, a British-made SD 360 turbo-prop aircraft, which carried 11 passengers and four crew.

PAL did not indicated if there may be any survivors. The only foreigner aboard the plane had been identified as John Richard Wood of Sydney, Australia.

The 36-seater disappeared Sunday while on a flight from the central city of Cebu to Iligan, the industrial capital of Lanao del Norte province on Mindanao island, about 500 miles south of Manila.

A search team flying a Philippine Air Force helicopter spotted the wreckage of the missing plane on 5,000-foot Mount Munay, 10 miles southwest of Iligan, early Wednesday when the weather cleared in the area for the first time since the crash, PAL said.

Ground teams were attempting to reach the jungle area, PAL said, and airline president Dante Santos was personally supervising the search operation.

The aircraft disappeared six minutes after the pilot radioed Iligan for landing clearance in good weather, PAL said.
