BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Peter Stastny scored his 800th NHL point Friday night thanks to a pass from a teammate in close pursuit of the same milestone.

Stastny scored his 800th point on a breakaway pass from Michel Goulet to lift the Quebec Nordiques to a 2-2 tie with the Buffalo Sabres. Stastny, who scored both Quebec goals, tied the score with 3:18 left in the third period.

Stastny, a native of Czechoslovakia, joined an elite group of NHL players to reach the 800-point mark, 13 of whom are still active. Goulet has 741 career points.

Terry Carkner fed Stastny a perfect pass for his 799th point in the first period. Stastny says he has a loftier goal still ahead: the 1,000-point mark.

'That's something where you really enter, where you become one of the better players in history,' Stastny said.

Nordiques Coach Andre Savard, who spent much of his NHL playing career with the Sabres, is 3-0-1 in his first stint behind the bench and Quebec is one of just four unbeaten teams in the league.

The Sabres were scrambling around in their own end trying to peserve a one-goal lead for much of the third period. Only an untimely fall by Sabres' defenseman Phil Housley and a perfect pass from Goulet to Stastny sent the game into overtime.

After the Sabres' Kevin Maguire received a holding penalty at 2:21 of the extra session, the Nordiques failed to get a good scoring opportunity against goalie Tom Barrasso. But Barrasso said the Nordiques squandered other opportunities during regulation.

'They had so many chances to score it was ridiculous, but yet they didn't,' he said.

The Sabres actually had the best chance to score during the extra session when Phil Housley and Scott Arniel hooked up and almost beat goalie Mario Gosselin while shorthanded.

Clark Gillies had put the Sabres ahead 2-1 34 seconds into the third period on a pass from Adam Creighton.

The Sabres tied the score 1-1 with 41 seconds left in the second period when Doug Smith was able to get the puck in the net on a controversial play. Dave Andreychuk skated over the Quebec blue line with Alain Cote trying to pull him down. Andreychuk threw a pass into the crease that Smith tipped just over the goal line past Gosselin. Gosselin argued with the goal judge after the play.
