STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Freshman Joel Logan kicked three field goals and Chris Correro recovered three fumbles Saturday night to spark Mississippi State to a 9-6 victory over Memphis State.
Logan provided the scoring for the Bulldogs, 3-2, hitting field goals of 43, 39 and 28 yards.
The 28-yarder snapped a 6-6 tie with 2:31 left.
Reserve quarterback Andy Whitwell then led Memphis State, 1-3, from its own 23-yard line to the Bulldogs' 27. Whitwell found Charles Wilson over the middle for 12 yards but Wilson fumbled and Correro, a redshirt freshman, recovered his third loose ball of the game with 21 seconds left to wrap up the victory.
Memphis State, trailing 6-0 at the half, tied the score on Johnny Butler's 30-yard field goal in the third quarter and his 39-yarder with 7:30 left.
Logan hit his first field goal on the Bulldogs' first possession for a 3-0 lead.
Memphis State then drove to the Bulldog 27-yard line where Correro made his first fumble recovery on a fourth and one play as Tigers quarterback Tim Jones pitched wide to tailback Gerald White.
The Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter with a 16-play, 40-yard drive culminated by Logan's 43-yarder.
The Tigers drove 67 yards in 15 plays for Butler's 30-yarder to cut the margin to 6-3 in the third period. Butler hit again from 39 yards to tie the game with 7:30 left to play.
Mississippi State then took the ball following the kickoff and drove for Logan's game-winning 28-yarder.
