LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Sandra Gasser of Switzerland today was stripped of the bronze medal she won in the 1,500 meters at the World Track and Field Championships and banned from competition for two years for using anabolic steroids, the International Amateur Athletic Federation announced.

Gasser, 27, who also won the European indoor 1,500 meters title at Lieven, France, in February, provided a positive test after the 1,500 meters final at Rome's Olympic Stadium on Sept 5.

She was also disqualified from receiving her $20,000 Grand Prix prize money.

Although she protested her innocence after the results of that test were made public last week, the second compuslory test also proved positive.

She is the tenth athlete to have been found guilty of using banned drugs this year by the IAAF.

Her bronze medal from the World Championships will now be awarded to Romania's Doina Melinte, who finished fourth.
