Bush rehires Teeley as press spokesman

WASHINGTON -- Vice President George Bush rehired former press secretary Peter Teeley as director of communications Friday for both his official office and his 1988 presidential campaign.

Teeley, 47, who was Bush's chief spokesman from 1979 to March 1985, has been in private consulting for two years.

Bush has been without a press secretary since Larry Thomas resigned for personal reasons in June.

Teeley, who previously worked for the Republican National Committee and the late Sen. Jacob Javits, R-N.Y., said he will oversee all phases of the vice president's press relations starting in November, when Bush officially becomes a candidate.

Teeley made news in Bush's 1984 campaign for re-election as vice president with a comment describing Democratic vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro as 'bitchy.'
