Thatcher: English language can't express horror of Hungerford

HUNGERFORD, England -- Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Thursday words cannot describe the horror of the Hungerford massacre and promised to consider tightening gun control laws if it would prevent more killing sprees.

'There aren't words in the English language to adequately describe what happened,' Thatcher told reporters while on a visit to the wounded and to those who participated in the rescue and security operations.

'What happened is not an accident. It's a crime, an evil crime, and we've never had anything like it in this country.'

The prime minister said police will investigate Michael Ryan's random slaughter of 14 people and 'we will learn everything possible from this event which is something new to this country.'

She said 'if (the gun control laws) need to be tightened up or we find this could prevent more events like this, of course, that will be considered.'
