NEW YORK -- Barry Lyons belted a grand slam and David Cone pitched four scoreless innings of relief Thursday to key the New York Mets' 7-4 triumph over the San Francisco Giants.

Lyons' grand slam, the first of his career and his third of the homer of the season, came in the sixth and gave the Mets a 7-4 lead. He scored Darryl Strawberry, Kevin McReynolds and Howard Johnson, who had been walked intentionally. The homer was the 149th of the year for the Mets, setting a team record. Kelly Downs, 9-8, gave up seven runs over 5 1-3 innings.

Cone, 3-2, relieved Terry Leach in the third inning and struck out six, including the side in the fifth. Cone, who came off the disabled list last week, gave up two hits, walked none and won for the first time since May 17 against the Giants. Randy Myers pitched three innings to pick up his third save.

Leach left in the third after walking Mike Aldrete and Will Clark tripled to move the Giants ahead 4-1. Leach had his 10-game winning streak snapped in his last outing in Chicago.

Kevin McReynolds' 23rd home run of the season, a solo shot, and Rafael Santana's RBI double pulled the Mets within 4-3 in the fourth.

Downs doubled in two runs in the second to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. After Bob Brenly and Jose Uribe singled, Downs faked a bunt and hit a sharp grounder past first baseman Keith Hernandez, who was charging on the play. The ball skipped down the line, allowing Brenly and Uribe to score.

The Giants had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Robby Thompson singled, stole second and scored on Aldrete's double.

The Mets tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of first when Len Dykstra opened with a single and took second after right fielder Chili Davis bobbled the ball. An infield hit by Wally Backman moved Dykstra to third and he scored when Hernandez singled to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
