LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Raiders punter Ray Guy, citing an accumulation of injuries in recent years, retired Tuesday after a 14-year NFL career.

Guy punted 1,049 times, the fourth highest total in NFL history, for 44,493 yards, the third highest total ever.

He averaged 42.4 yards per kick.

The 37-year-old Guy, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a member of three Super Bowl champions, has been bothered by back problems and other nagging injuries in recent years.

Guy, who joined the Raiders in 1973 as the first punter ever selected in the first round of the NFL draft, finished his career with 619 consecutive punts without a block, the second longest streak in NFL history.

Guy got such hang time on his punts that he was once accused of putting helium in the ball to make it stay afloat longer.

The former Southern Mississippi star appeared in 207 consecutive NFL games. Only Hall of Fame center Jim Otto played in more games with the Raiders.

The Raiders have signed Stan Talley, who led the now-defunct U.S. Football League in punting two of its three years while playing for the Oakland Invaders.
