Santos Laciar of Argentina captured the World Boxing Council...

REIMS, France -- Santos Laciar of Argentina captured the World Boxing Council super-flyweight title Saturday when he stopped champion Gilberto Roman of Mexico in the 11th round.

Laciar, 28, opened a cut over Roman's left eye in the first round and aggravated the injury in the 11th with a hard right hand.

Italian referee Angelo Poletti asked the fight doctor to examine Roman and declared Laciar the winner when the doctor advised him to stop the scheduled 12-round bout.

Laciar, who defended the World Boxing Association flyweight title 11 times, improved to 68-6-10. Roman dropped to 43-1-4.

Roman, 25, who eight times defended the WBC title he won from Japan's Jiro Watanabe March 30, 1986, earned $80,000, while Laciar took home $20,000.

Laciar had fought Roman to a draw August 30 in Cordoba, Argentina, in the former champion's toughest title defense.

On the undercard, Salvatore Curcetti of Italy knocked out Frenchman Daniel Londas in the first round to win the European super-featherweight title left vacant by Belgium's Jean-Marc Renard.
