National Headliner Awards winners announced

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- The Philadelphia Inquirer and Newsweek magazine took top awards in the print categories of the National Headliner Awards, a 53-year-old competition sponsored by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the club announced Friday.

The Inquirer received the newspaper public service award for its series on court reform and reporter John Woestendiek received the award for investigative reporting for his 'Evidence of Innocence' series.

Newsweek magazine received the award for magazine or syndicate coverage of a major news event for 'The Chernobyl Syndrome.' Columnist Robert J. Samuelson was given the award for best special interest column for his Newsweek columns on financial and economic issues.

Newsweek photographer Haidar received the spot news photography award for his photograph of the public execution of a Sunni Muslim in Beirut.

-Dave Bauman, Riverside Press Enterprise, Riverside, Ca., outstanding sports photography.

-Michael R. Brown, Florida Today, outstanding spot news photography.

-Dieter Endlicher, Associated Press, outstanding sports photography.

-Peter Southwick, Associated Press, outstanding feature photography.

-Mike Peters, Dayton Daily News and Journal Herald, outstanding editorial cartoons.

-Anne Raver, Newsday, outstanding special or feature column, 'Gardens.'

-Roger Simon, The Baltimore Sun, outstanding local interest column.

-Mark Zeman, Kansas City Star, outstanding news reporting, circulation over 150,000, for 'Dirty Grain.'

-The Press-Telegram, Long Beach, Ca., outstanding news reporting, circulation 50,000 to 150,000, for 'The Cerritos Disaster.'

-Randell Beck, The Knoxville Journal, outstanding news reporting, circulation up to 50,000, for 'Billion Dollar Bust.'

More than 1,200 entries were received in the 18 print categories. Winners in the broadcast categories will be announced later this month. The awards weekend will be presented May 8-9 in Atlantic City.
