NEW CITY, N.Y. -- A New Jersey man was charged Wednesday with impersonating New York Yankees outfielder Dan Pasqua and taking $7,000 from a woman who believed he was the ballplayer.

Rockland County District Attorney Kenneth Gribetz said a grand jury indicted James Powers of Norwood, N.J., on two counts of grand larceny and one count of criminal impersonation.

Pasqua testified before the grand jury, Gribetz said.

Powers, 25, allegedly became involved with a 22-year-old woman while he was impersonating Pasqua.

'She introduced him to family and friends as Dan Pasqua,' said Gribetz. 'She 100 percent believed him.'

Gribetz said Powers had a 'strong similarity' to Pasqua.

After Powers was involved with the woman, she gave him the money to buy her a new Trans Am and he then went to Las Vegas. Gribetz said authorities believe Powers used the money in Las Vegas.

Authorities are continuing the investigation.

If convicted, Powers faces a maximum of seven years in jail.
