SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Cary Grant left his estate to his fifth wife and his only child, and gave thousands of dollars to friends and charities, a will filed in probate court shows.

Grant died Saturday of a stroke in Davenport, Iowa, and his will, dated Nov. 26, 1984, was filed Wednesday.

It provided for friends and business associates and for the education of the matinee idol's only child, Jennifer, 20, whose mother was Grant's former wife, actress Dyan Cannon.

Grant's requests that his remains be cremated and that no funeral be held were complied with.

He also carefully avoided disclosing the extent of his wealth with the phrase, 'Should my executors be required to make a statement as to the amount and character of my estate ... that said statement merely show my estate is in excess of $10,000.'

Grant left his wife, Barbara, their Beverly Hills home and all its furnishings, art works and cars. He also specified that half of what remains of the estate after taxes and specific bequests should go to his wife and the other half into a trust fund for his daughter.

She will receive the income from the trust until she is 30, when she will be able to withdraw half the principal, attorney Jay Stein said. She will receive the remainder when she turns 35.

Grant left his clothing, jewelry and other personal effects to family lawyer Stanley Fox to distribute among family and friends, including Frank Sinatra, MGM magnate Kirk Kerkorian, producer Stanley Donen, Los Angeles Times Hollywood columnist Roderick Mann and Marjorie Everett, managing partner of the Hollywood Park race track.

Grant left $25,000 to Variety Club International, which raises money for underprivileged and handicapped children, and $50,000 to the Motion Picture and Television Fund, which runs a hospital and retirement home in Woodland Hills, Calif., for entertainment industry veterans.

The will specified another $20,000 for the John Tracy Clinic for the hearing impaired; $100,000 for his bookkeeper, Joseph Marin; and $10,000 each to the granddaughter and son of attorney Fox.
