BOULDER, Colo. -- Dmitri Konyshev of the Soviet Union overtook the leaders to win a downhill sprint Thursday and finish first in the 87-mile Golden-to-Boulder Road Race, a leg of the Coors International Bicycle Classic.

Colorado racers Leslee Schenk and Danute Bankaitis broke from the field and held off a rally to finish 1-2 in the women's 57.5-mile Foothills Road Race from Golden to Boulder.

Andrew Hamsten led for more than 67 miles of the men's race, but was caught by a group of 31 riders, including overall race leader Bernard Hinault, and yielded the lead on the sprint to the finish.

Konyshev finished in 3 hours, 25 minutes, nipping Tour de France winner Greg LeMond and Australian Phil Anderson, and scoring the first victory by a Soviet rider in this year's classic.

Hinault remained atop the overall standings with a 2-minute, 25-second lead over Anderson. LeMond was two seconds behind Anderson in total time.

Schenk, of Boulder, finished the women's race in 2:13:44. Bankaitis, of Colorado Springs, was less than a bike-length behind, and Dutch racer Connie Meyer trailed the leaders by 20 seconds.

Jeannie Longo of France finished fourth behind Meyer, but remained atop the overall race standings despite being penalized 15 seconds for crossing the centerline on the highway. Longo leads Inga Thompson-Benedict, Reno, Nev., by 1 minute, 1 second in total time.

Schenk said she expected the race to have 'a lot of attacks and counter-attacks.'

'The previous attacks were strong, but when Bunki (Bankaitis) made her move, it was at the perfect time,' she said. 'Things were strung out, and people were tired from two previous attacks. I was in perfect position to go out with her.'
