Truck driver charged with shooting Ricky Skaggs's son

ROANOKE, Va. -- A Maryland truck driver was arrested at a weigh station early Monday and charged with wounding the young son of country music star Ricky Skaggs in a bizarre shooting incident on Interstate 81.

Andrew Skaggs, 7, was listed in stable condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

State police said Edward Dean Duehring Jr., 36, of Germantown, Md., apparently fired into the car in which young Skaggs was riding with his mother, Brenda, about 9:20 p.m. Sunday as the vehicles were traveling south on I-81 in Botetourt County.

Duehring was arrested about 1:30 a.m. Monday at a truck weigh station near the shooting and was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a stolen gun, state police said. He was also charged with possession of cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana. Bond was set at $125,000.

Authorities had no immediate motive for the shooting, but state police spokesman Charles Vaughan said the incident occurred as the car, driven Brenda Skaggs, the ex-wife of the country music star, passed Deuhring's truck.

'Two lanes narrowed down to one lane (where the highway was being repaired) and when it opened back up to two lanes, the car went to pass the truck and that's when the incident occurred,' said Vaughan.
