FOOTBALLS ACROSS THE WATER

By WILLIAM C. TROTT, United Press International

ABC sportscaster Frank Gifford is going British. Gifford will be seen in Britain as one of the anchors of a weekly NFL broadcast.

He will team up with John Smith, a Briton who is a former kicker with the New England Patriots, to give the increasingly football hungry Brits their weekly gridiron fix. The program, which shows highlights of a game of the week and a rundown of other games, will be based in New York. Gifford and Smith will get a warmup Aug. 3 when the Chicago Bears meet the Dallas Cowboys at London's Wembley Stadium. Football's growing popularity on the other side of the Atlantic is underlined by the fact that all 80,000 seats at Wembley sold out in two weeks. Gifford will continue in the ABC booth for 'Monday Night Football' broadcasts and will be joined by Al Michaels after O.J. Simpson and Joe Namath were cut.
