ST. LOUIS -- Carl Rose, a former member of the St. Louis Steamers of the Major Indoor Soccer League, was in intensive care Monday after brain surgery to remove a blood clot suffered in a fall at his home.

Rose was listed in serious condition at St. John's Mercy Medical Center with a fractured skull after falling from a ladder.

'He's stable. His vitals are good. He's really in good shape for what he's been through,' said Rose's wife Teri.

The 34-year-old Rose was released by the Steamers at the end of the season.He had been with the team since its first season in 1979.

'It's always a shock when something like this happens,' said Mike Sanger, the Steamers' general manager. 'We're all praying for Carl. He's been with the club a long time and he's always been a gentleman.'
