PITTSBURGH -- Westinghouse Electric Corp. Wednesday announced the acquisition of Xetron Corp., a high technology communications development firm located at Cincinnati.

Formed in 1972, the privately held Ohio firm had sales in 1985 of approximately $11 million.

The firm employs 180 persons, primarily engineering and other technical personnel.

Xetron is a highly regarded defense electronics contractor noted for innovative communications concepts. It develops highly sophisticated tactical communications equipment.

'Xetron represents another important acquisition in the latest of a series of moves designed to strengthen the communications electronics capabilities of the Westinghouse Defense and Electronics Center,' said Harry B. Smith, executive vice president, Westinghouse Defense.

Xetron will report as a wholly owned subsidiary to the Defense Center's communications division in Baltimore, under the management of A.T. Monheit, general manager, Smith said.

Customers of Xetron include the Department of Defense and a variety of aerospace companies.

Westinghouse Defense is headquartered in Baltimore and is one of the nation's major suppliers of airborne, ground and shipboard electronics systems for the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
