KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs Monday announced the signing of eight first-year free agents, including former Kansas quarterback Frank Seurer.

The Chiefs also signed running back Chris Smith, who earned a long look as a rookie free agent in the 1985 chiefs camp but was released on the final roster cut down last september.

Also signed were wide receiver Emile Harry, offensive lineman Matthew Moran, running back Woody Pippens, defensive back J. C. Pearson, punter Thomas McCarthy, and tight end Paul Bergmann.

Seurer finished his career at Kansas as the Big Eight's all-time passing leader with a 6,410 yards from 1980-83. Seurer played two years for the Los Angeles Express of the USFL. In 20, games he completed 184-of-374 passes for 2,137 yards, 10 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

Seurer has signed a NFL free agent contract with Seatle Seahawks in 1985, but was waived prior to the regular season. He played in one preseason game with the Seahawks.

Smith, a 6-foot-1, 235-pounder, spent the entire 1985 perseason with the Chiefs, carrying the ball twice for 18 yards. He gained 846 yards in four years at Notre Dame.

Harry and Moran were both 1985 draft choices, but were released before the season. Harry, from Stanford, was a fourth round draft selection of the Atlanta Falcons. Moran, who also played at Stanford, was a sixth round choice by the Dallas Cowboys.

Pippen, Pearson and McCarthy also were in NFL camps last year, while Bergmann spent the past two seasons in the USFL.
