BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Bill Whitmore, head basketball coach at Vermont for the past five years, Friday announced he will leave the post at the end of this season.
With three games left on the 1985-86 schedule, the Catamounts have a 7-17 mark.
Since Whitmore took the head coaching job in 1981, his teams have compiled a record of 43-92.
'I feel it is time for a new direction and new leadership at Vermont,' said Whitmore, a 1975 graduate of St. Bonaventure. 'And I'm looking forward to new opportunities and challenges.'
Athletic director Denis Lambert said the university would find it difficult to find another head coach 'who has the qualities of dedication, loyalty, integrity and basketball knowledge that were exemplified in Bill's career.'
