AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas-size cake Prince Charles will slice in honor of the Lone Star state's sesquicentennial is being billedas the world's largest at 90,000 pounds and measurements of 100 feet by 80 feet.
Charles will join Gov. Mark White in cutting the huge cake at a gala party Thursday marking Texas' 150 years of independence from Mexico.
Duncan Hines, which is directing the cake project, said sections of the cake will be sold to raise money for the restoration of the Texas state Capitol.
Franz Eichenauer -- the record-holder for world's largest cake, an 81,982-pound creation built in Atlantic City in 1982 -- is supervising construction of the Texas cake.
Eichenauer, vice president of the food and beverage division of the Hospitality Management Corp. of Dallas, owns several records for the world's largest food items.
It is the first time Eichenauer has used a cake mix in making one of his giant cakes.
'It will be a little easier this time,' he said. 'This realiability (of a mix) is a great asset when building a cake of this size.'
Nearly 36,000 pounds of cake mix was used to construct the cake, which was baked at the Colonial Cake Co., a 104-year-old family bakery in San Antonio.
The cake required 12 bakers who spent 32 hours creating it.
Duncan Hines said a 90,000-pound cake calls for 31,026 boxes of cake mix, 93,108 eggs, 10,346 cups of oil and 38,795 cups of water. The cake is being assembled in three layers from more than 20,000 sheet cakes and topped with 15 tons of vanilla frosting.
