NEW YORK -- Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and seven other rock 'n' roll pioneers, Thursday became the first inductees into a rock music hall of fame that has no home.

The 10 performers were voted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame by a group of more than 200 music critics, historians and record company executives last year and were to be formally inducted in a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, said Bob Altshuler, a hall of fame spokesman.

The inductees were Presley, Holly, Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

"The voters were looking for those artists who have made a lasting contribution to the development of America's great tradition of rock 'n' roll" Altshuler said.
