ATHENS, Greece -- Leaders of two parties have called for Greece to follow Spain's recent example and establish full diplomatic relations with Israel.
Ioannis Zighdis, leader of the small, centrist Democratic Center party, said Wednesday after a meeting with an Israeli official that Israel wants to establish full diplomatic relations with Greece.
Zighdis and Constantine Mitsotakis, leader of the conservative opposition New Democracy party leader, both have suggested giving full recognition to Israel.
The ruling Pan Hellenic Socialist movement and the small but influential Greek Communist Party oppose full recognition. Foreign Minister Carolos Papoulias, in an address to parliament last year, said recognition could only come 'within the framework of a general solution to the Middle East problem.'
Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization enjoy the same level of diplomatic representation, at a mission rather than embassy level.
