LOS ANGELES -- Olivia Newton-John, the Grammy-winning singer who launched her film career with 'Xanadu,' gave birth Friday to her first child, a daughter, her publicist said.

Newton-John, 37, gave birth to a 6 pound, 8 ounce girl at 5:30 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with her husband, actor Matt Lattanzi, 27, at her side, said her publicist Beebe Kline.

The singer went into labor at noon Thursday and both she and her newborn daughter, Chloe, are in excellent health, Kline said.

The baby is the couple's first child. They were married in 1984 after meeting during the filming of 'Xanadu.'

Newton-John came to the United States in 1972 after establishing a singing career in Australia and England, where she was born. Besides 'Xanadu,' she also co-starred with John Travolta in 'Grease' and 'Two of a Kind.'

Newton-John has won four Grammy Awards and 10 American Music Awards and has sold more than 100 million records.

Her first hit in the United States was 'If Not For You,' and was quickly followed by Grammy-winning hits 'Let Me Be There' and 'I Honestly Love You.' Her most recent gold record was for 'Let's Get Physical.'

Lattanzi is best known for his starring role as a youngster in 'My Tutor.'
