SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Harry Usher, commissioner of the U.S. Football League, was released from a hospital in excellent condition Wednesday following coronary bypass surgery, a spokeswoman at the center said.

Usher, who was named USFL chief last January, first entered St. John Hospital and Health Center for observation Dec. 20 after a physical examination in which he complained of chest pains.

He was subsequently released, then readmitted Jan. 8 for the operation, officials said.

Spokeswoman Terry Starkman said Usher was in excellent condition when he left the hospital following the Jan. 9 surgery that diverted blood from clogged arteries leading to the heart.

Before his appointment to the USFL commission, Usher was the executive vice president and general manager of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee for the 1984 Summer Games.
