STANFORD, Calif. -- Three Stanford football players, including starting safety Sam Sutherland, have been arrested on charges they illegally used a fellow teammate's credit cards and checks to purchase clothing from a local department store, university authorities said.

A Stanford spokesman, making the charges public in a statement on Wednesday, said the incident allegedly occurred on Dec. 3 when Sutherland, Wendell Brown and Kenneth Richardson attempted to purchase approximately $470 worth of clothing using a check and credit cards belonging to teammate David Sweeney.

The three players were released and ordered to appear in Palo Alto Municipal Court on January 14th.

Football coach Jack Elway said he had talked to all the players involved and with some of their parents. He said he would talk to the three players again when they returned from Christmas break. The coach refused to comment on what action he or the university would take in the case.
