NEW DELHI, India -- Two trains collided today in the eastern state of West Bengal, killing at least one person and injuring more than 300 others, seven seriously, police said.

The accident occurred before dawn at Dhupguri railroad station, about 750 miles east of New Delhi.

Police in the state capital of Calcutta said the New Delhi-bound Tinsukia Mail passenger train collided with a freight train. Three cars of the passenger train derailed in the accident.

At least one person, a railroad policeman, was killed and more than 300 others, including several children, were injured. Seven victims were hospitalized in critical condition.

Police said army, railroad and local government medical teams rushed to the scene. No further details were immediately available.
