FOXBORO, Mass. -- Quarterback Steve Grogan wanted complete deception on his bootleg Sunday, so he decided to fake out his own team too.

The Patriots veteran quarerback scored on a 3-yard run with 3:27 remaining to give New England a 20-13 victory which snapped the New York Jets' five-game winning streak.

Grogan had called a handoff to Tony Collins in the huddle, but faked the ball to the running back and then sprinted untouched into the left corner of the end zone.

'He didn't call it in the huddle, he just went out and did it,' center Pete Brock said. 'Only Collins and (receiver Stanley) Morgan knew about it.'

Grogan, an 11-year veteran playing in place of starter Tony Eason who separated his shoulder last week, calls all his own plays.

'Sometimes you have to gamble and take chances,' Grogan said. 'This time it worked.'

With the score tied 13-13, Grogan put New England on the Jets' 6-yard line with a 47-yard pass to Stanley Morgan. After Craig James gained three yards on a run, Grogan made his move.

'Steve Grogan's a tough old pro,' Jets coach Joe Walton said.

Grogan improved to 11-3 against the Jets as a starter.

'I haven't seen a tougher quarterback in my life. I just haven't,' Jets nose tackle Joe Klecko said.

Grogan's keeper was New England's first rushing touchdown since the season-opener and improved the Patriots to 4-3. The Jets dropped into a tie with the Miami Dolphins for first place in the AFC East at 5-2.

With the score tied 6-6 early in the fourth quarter, Grogan culminated a 92-yard, 12-play drive by hitting Irving Fryar with a 36-yard touchdown pass to give New England a seven-point lead.

The Jets tied the score 13-13 on their next possession on Tony Paige's 2-yard plunge. The drive was keyed by a 49-yard pass from Ken O'Brien to Wesley Walker, who was pulled down at the 2.

The Jets' Freeman McNeil, the leading rusher in the NFL going into week seven, did not play due to back and rib injuries.

Kickers Tony Franklin and Pat Leahy had supplied the point production through three periods. Franklin hit field goals of 19 and 44 yards for New England. Leahy connected from 53 and 52 yards.

The Jets lost an important scoring opportunity when with the score tied 13-13, Paige fumbled on New England's 2 and rookie Garin Veris recovered for the Patriots. Veris also ended New York's final drive by sacking O'Brien at the Jets' 47.

New England's defense limited the Jets to only 83 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Johnny Hector, replacing McNeil, carried 21 times for 80 yards.

O'Brien threw for 246 yards, completing 15-of-31 attempts. Wesley Walker had six receptions for 140 yards.

James led New England's runners with 94 yards on 22 carries.

Grogan, starting a game for the first time since Sept. 16, 1984, completed only 11-of-32 passes for 171 yards as he had several long passes dropped. Grogan improved his record as a starter against the Jets to 11-3.

Franklin's 19-yard field goal gave New England a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Leahy responded early in the second with the longest field goal of his career, a wind-aided 53 yarder, to tie the score.
