TOKYO -- Defending champion Czechoslovakia, led by U.S. Open champion Hana Mandlikova, defeated Greece 2-1 and fourth-seeded Bulgaria routed the Soviet Union 3-0 Monday in the opening round of the Federation Cup women's tennis tournament.
Sweden, seeded No. 5, was upset by Canada, 2-1, Japan beat Austria 3-0 and Britain downed West Germany by the same score.
Mandlikova had little trouble routing Angeliki Kanellopoulou, 6-2, 6-0, while Helena Sukova beat Olga Tsarbopoulou in another singles match, 6-1, 6-4.
Canada's top player, Carling Bassett, routed Catarina Lindqvist, 6-4, 6-3, and Jane Young turned back Carina Karlsson 7-5, 6-1 as Canada eliminated Sweden.
In other first-round matches, Switzerland defeated the Netherlands 2-1, Hungary blanked Belgium 3-0 and Yugoslavia beat Ireland 3-0.
A total of 38 nations were entered in the eight-day tournament, which is the women's version of Davis Cup.
