ATHENS, Ga. -- Flanker Fred Lane scored on a 33-yard reverse near the end of the first quarter and got Georgia out of trouble with a similar run late in the game Saturday to lead the Bulldogs to a 17-14 victory over Baylor.

Both runs by Lane, a 168-pound junior, caught Baylor off guard. However, both the touchdown run, which gave Georgia the game's first points with 1:27 left in the first quarter, and his second reverse, a 35-yard jaunt with less than four minutes to play, showcased Lane's open-field running.

Georgia, which lost to Alabama in its season opener, took the lead for good early in the third quarter when freshman Tim Worley went over from a yard out to cap a 24-yard drive which began after Kenny Sims recovered a Baylor fumble. That put Georgia ahead 14-7.

The Bulldogs, 1-1, made it 17-7 midway through the third quarter on a 42-yard field goal by freshman Steve Crumley. Georgia then spent most of the remainder of the game staving off Baylor's persistent passing attack.

The Bears, winners last week over Wyoming, tied the score 7-7 with 3:26 left in the first half on a 1-yard plunge by Ralph Stockemer.Baylor, 1-1, closed to 17-14 with 3:40 left to play on a 25-yard TD pass from Tom Muecke to Glenn Pruitt.

The ensuing kickoff pinned Georgia at its own 20. On the next play, Lane ran the reverse for the second time, putting the ball at Baylor's 45. The Bulldogs, sticking to inside runs, then managed to run the clock out.

Muecke had the Bears in scoring position early in the final quarter, but was intercepted by Miles Smith at Georgia's 1.

Cody Carlson, Baylor's alternate quarterback, passed the Bears from their own 20 to Georgia's 11, only to have the Bulldogs hold on downs with seven minutes left.

Muecke and Carlson combined for 23 completions in 42 attempts for 308 yards. Georgia's freshman quarterback Wayne Johnson hit on 4-of-11 for 20 yards and was intercepted twice.
