HOUSTON -- Houston Oilers rookie wide receiver Michael Akiu was forced to switch from offense to defense when he arrived at his hotel room to find a thief swiping his wallet and credit cards.
'I pushed my door open, and I felt somebody standing behind my door,' Akiu said Monday of the encounter about 4 a.m. Sunday.
'I looked. He had my wallet, my carry-on bag and some of my credit cards.'
Akiu, 23, punched the burglar in the face but the man fled. The 185-pound Hawaiian gave chase and, with a hotel security guard, caught the man in the lobby.
Ronnie Delano, 30, was charged with burglary and intent to commit theft, and was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bond. He was treated at Ben Taub Hospital for an injured eye.
Akiu's roommate, kick return specialist Willie Drewrey, had gone to bed earlier in the evening and was not awakened by the burglar when he entered the hotel room.
