DENVER -- Quarterback Scott Stankavage, called off the waiver wire last week in the wake of injuries to both John Elway and Gary Kubiak, was among five players cut Monday by the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos also waived running back Chris Brewer, defensive back Roger Jackson, linebacker Darren Comeaux and offensive lineman James Keyton to reach the NFL's 45-man regular-season limit.
It was the eighth time in two years that Stankavage has moved either into or out of the Broncos' organization.
'I got a call from the secretary this morning saying to bring the playbook over,' he said. 'I told her I didn't have a playbook this time.'
Stankavage said Broncos' coaches explained to him that keeping three quarterbacks was 'too great a luxury.'
Denver have several players on injured reserve, leading to speculation that Comeaux and Jackson could be called back.
