THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys reached the NFL roster limit of 60 Tuesday by placing seven players on the injured reserve list, cutting another and labeling veteran offensive tackle Howard Richards as physically unable to perform.
Richards, the club's 1981 first-round draft pick who is still recovering from a knee injury suffered last season, will miss the first six weeks of the season.
Those placed on injured reserve were offensive lineman Dowe Aughtman of Auburn and Jimie Covington of Carson-Newman, tight end Chris Waltman of Oregon State, linebackers Neal Dellocono of UCLA, Karl Jordan of Vanderbilt and Vince Albritton of Washington and wide receiver Ron Jenkins of Colorado State.
Aughtman and Albritton were in their second year with the Cowboys while all the others were rookies.
The Cowboys also cut rookie free-agent quarterback Loyal Proffitt of Abilene Christian.
